Body modification as incipient transhumanism?!? [Jun. 18th, 2004|12:48 am]

Check out this article:

It's partway down a larger page on the idea of transhumanism, but I found it very thought-provoking with regard to current attitudes towards body modification, especially what would be regarded as extreme by most ordinary people.

It seems to fit the idea of this community very neatly, given that transhumanism is all about perfecting our merely human bodies...

Yeah, I find the whole website quite intriguing. It's good to see quite a positive angle on body modification from a non-modded source; a lot of people seem to automatically associate modification with a self-destructive streak, or low self-esteem, or whatever. Of course, it can be that, but it can also be a means of reclaiming the body, or all manner of other things including (as of now) a route to transhumanism, a route beyond the body.

For me a big part of body art is that transformative aspect, taking the rather dull and samey human body and changing it according to one's will. I can't see how that can be anything other than a positive thing, but a lot of more old-fashioned psychological tests will still regard it as akin to mutilation!
